ART 101 – Introduction to Art History        

COURSE SYLLABUS

Course Description: This course is offered as a dual-enrollment course through Penn Highlands. This course introduces students to the major periods of Western art history, including Ancient, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Romanesque, Gothic Renaissance, Baroque, 19th and 20th century. The course will examine the religious, philosophical, and social forces that shaped the masterpieces.

  • Poster board for final project

  • Identification of significant Western artists by style and technique

  • Identification and grouping of Western art by style and technique

  • Identification of significant individual pieces of Western art

  • Analysis and description of an individual work or style of Western art

 

Expected Learning Outcomes: 

After successfully completing this course, students should be able to:

    1. The student will be able to name the artist responsible for a work of art effectively evidenced by:

      1. Given a series of paintings through a slide format the student will be able to identify the artists’ technique at a success rate of 70%.

      2. Given a series of paintings (through slide format) the student will be able to identify the style of that artist at a success rate of 70%.

 

    1. The student will be able to identify the time period of a series of paintings, sculpture and mixed media effectively evidenced by:

      1. Given a series of artwork displayed through a slide format the student will be able to recognize and identify the styles and techniques of a specific time period at a success rate of 70%.

      2. Given a series of artwork displayed through a slide format the student will be able to group artwork within a time period or category of Art at a success rate of 70%

 

    1. The student will be able to identify the name of a piece of artwork effectively as evidenced by:

      1. Given a more series of artwork pieces through a slide format the student will be able to name the title of a piece at a success rate of 70%.

      2. Given a series of artwork pieces through a slide format the student will be able to name the title of the piece by identifying the artists’ technique and style at a success rate of 70%.

 

    1. The student will be able to describe the artwork piece effectively as evidenced by:

      1. Given a series of artwork through a slide format the student will be able to effectively analyze the piece and describe the techniques and styles along with historical facts at a success rate of 70%.

      2. Given a series of artwork pieces through slide format the student will be able to describe the artists’ goals as well as symbolism and hidden meanings of a piece of artwork at a success rate of 70%.

 

Student Evaluation: 

 

Students will be evaluated by weekly quizzes and flash cards on each chapter, and 4 written Exams (2 per marking period). Students will be given the last full week of class and the beginning of the last week to work on their final Essays and Project. Students will present their research, and final project during the last 2 days of class.

There will be no re-examinations. The student is responsible for making up any class material missed in the case of an absence. They will need to verify a time with the instructor to make-up their quiz or exam outside of class time within the week of returning to school.

The student’s final grade will be determined using the following grading policy:

90%-100% = “A,” 

80%-89% = “B,” 

70%-79% = “C,” 

60%-69% = “D,” 

and below 60% = “F.”

 

Course Policy:

 

Phones: Phones are prohibited unless otherwise specified by the instructor! This is a college-level course. Time in class should be used as directed for note-taking, discussion, questions, or examinations. All phones need to be put away/turned off at the beginning of class and secured until the very end. NO EXCEPTIONS! Unauthorized phone use will result in an immediate log entry.

 

Quiz/Exam Days:

Students will be allotted the full amount of time during class to take their quiz or exam. Once a student is done with their exam they will turn it in to the instructor, then they will begin reading the following chapter for the next week. This allows time in class for students to do their assigned readings, and be prepared for the next week. Students should remain quiet and in their seats until the period is over so that students still taking the exams can concentrate. Be Respectful, Responsible, and Ready.
